Curiously missing from this weeks mainstream news here at Airstrip 1 have been the protests in Toronto, the mass arrests and detainment of over a thousand people. The first use by Canadian police of tear gas on its own citizens, the huge billion dollar bill that the citizens of Canada will have to pay for the privilege of being beaten, tortured, sexually harassed, fired upon with rubber bullets, smashed in the head with truncheons. All so the center of Toronto can play host to the G8 and G20.
Instead headline news for 2 days running has been the completely bogus non-story of 10 Russian Spies being arrested in America. This story has no details, no basis in fact, and is clearly some kind of diplomatic political propaganda.
That the illegal detainment of over a thousand Canadians in Guantanamo style cages hasn’t even had a mention seems incredible.
The only BBC article about Canada on their websites front page today is about the Queen’s visit.
Canadians themselves seem shocked to find that they don’t live in a free country, and that their authorities are subservient to the G20 and not them.
So called Black Bloc anarchists conveniently provided the police with some reasons to get all militant on the peaceful protestors, though evidence is already emerging that these were actually police officers engaged in provocateur duties, as has previously happened at many protests around the world. Famously earlier this year at another incident in Canada where police disguised as black bloc activists tried to incite violence at a peaceful protest in order to give the riot police an excuse to kettle and detain the protestors. They were caught red handed and in the following days police admitted the ‘activists’ in question were working for them.
Toronto police chiefs refused to discount the use of such tactics in the run up to the recent debacle in a Toronto police press conference.
Disgusting corporate lackey behaviour from our ‘protectors’ has unfortunately become the norm. Protest needs to get smart to deal with these new threats.
